Organizing plays, collections, and variations

A good naming system distinguishes formation, concept, direction, or tag without forcing the coach to decode a sentence. Decide the convention before the playbook becomes large.

• Keep formation names consistent
• Use the same directional language everywhere
• Reserve tags for meaningful adjustments
• Do not use two names for the same concept

Collections are curated shelves, not duplicates. Use them for a weekly plan, personnel group, situation, tournament, or install phase.

3. 3Assign the collection to teams when appropriate.
4. 4Retire or update temporary collections after the event.

Create a variation when the core idea is shared but a formation, route, motion, or tag changes. Families preserve the relationship while allowing each play to remain callable on its own.
